About the Event

 Welcome to the Perth Mental Health Film Festival. 

This Is My Brave Australia Inc is a charity organisation dedicated to promoting a national conversation around mental health.Through the telling of lived experience stories, live on stage or through film, we endeavor to break the stigma surrounding mental illness. We have collected films from all over the world that:

  • Provide and inspiring voice for social justice and human rights
  • Highlight positive contributions made by mental health consumers
  • Fight Stigma and defies stereotypes
  • Share real life stories

This screening is a retrospective of films shown during the 2018 Canberra Mental Health Film Festival.

 Session 1 PTSD  12:10 start

 What It Feels Like Steven Fraser 3 mins. A short animated documentary that investigates voice hearing. Small boxes that contain flip book style animation are presented to show the emotion that people who hear voices feel. 

 Calm in Chaos Tracey Cochrane (Canada) 1hr 4 minsA documentary focusing on those front-line servicepeople dealing with PTSD.  

Gentle Mentals Veronica Padilla 2 mins 19 sec (Animation)We created these relatable animals with issues to lighten this heavy conversation. Laughter is healing and also a great ice-breaker. If we can smile and speak more openly about something that touches so many, we’d all be better for it.

DokumenTRATE Renato Švara, Gašper Markun (Slovenia)Documents the camp The Art of Deinstitutionalisation that was organised in the spring of 2017 at the castle Cmurek in Trate that gave a voice to the residents of mental health institutions. For a week they were not patients but artists. 

NICABOB (USA)A lonely teenager inadvertently makes a real human connection when he shuts down his Youtube channel after haters attack him. 

The Little World of Emilie Mehdi Noblesse (France) Emilie is a remarkable person, funny and lovable, but at the same time capricious, sulky and stubborn. At the Centre, almost all of her day is ritualized: work, meals, her schedules… but of what use are these rituals to her? What meaning does she give them? What can she say about them? But above all, what can these rituals say about us?
