Creating a safe space to talk about mental health

Sometimes it is as simple as a t-shirt or a sign on a car to create a safe space to talk about mental health. I have been back and forth recently supporting our new partners the Ngunnawal Street Pantries. Whilst there I get to talk to people from the community who drop by to donate goods.

Some ask me what my t-shirt means or mention they have seen my car with the TIMBA sign and wondered what it means. Once I explain to them we are all about breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness then the space opens up for them to discuss their own mental health or mental

health generally and they give freely of their experiences in the knowledge there is an understanding, compassionate and non-judgemental environment to talk comfortably in.

It is this community connection and creation of safe spaces that are informal and non-medicalised that is integral to breaking down stigma
